Ngorongoro Crater

Awesome Tours

Discover the "Garden of Eden" and marvel at the Big Five against the backdrop of a lush volcanic caldera.

Ngorongoro Crater: A Natural Wonder and Premier Safari Destination

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most remarkable natural wonders in Africa. Often referred to as the “Garden of Eden,” the crater is renowned for its breathtaking beauty and is considered one of the best places in East Africa to see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros).

A visit to Ngorongoro Crater offers a unique safari experience, surrounded by volcanic craters that provide stunning backdrops to some of the richest grazing grounds in Africa. Whether you’re just starting your safari adventure or seeking an unforgettable wildlife encounter, the Ngorongoro Crater should be an essential part of your Northern Tanzania Safari.

Why Visit Ngorongoro Crater?

Ngorongoro Crater Roots & Peaks

  • The Big Five: Ngorongoro Crater is known for having one of the highest concentrations of big game in Africa, offering excellent opportunities to see the Big Five in a relatively small area.
  • Breathtaking Landscape: The crater itself is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, a geological marvel that creates a stunning, lush environment. The crater floor is teeming with wildlife, including elephants, lions, zebras, and wildebeest.
  • Cultural Interaction: A visit to Ngorongoro also provides an opportunity to interact with the Maasai people, one of East Africa’s most well-known indigenous tribes. This cultural experience adds a rich layer to the overall safari adventure.

Safari Experience at Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, with its rich and varied landscapes supporting an abundance of species. However, there are a few things to consider when planning your visit:

  • Crowds: As one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations, the Ngorongoro Crater can become quite crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. For a more peaceful experience, we recommend a two-night stay at Ngorongoro, allowing you to enjoy the park’s beauty while avoiding the busiest times. Afterward, move on to the quieter Serengeti for a more private safari experience.
  • Wildlife Diversity: Wildlife in the crater remains consistently abundant. The crater’s unique micro-climate, coupled with the high density of game, ensures that visitors are likely to encounter a variety of animals, from herds of wildebeest and zebras to the rare rhino. Birdwatching is also a highlight, with flamingos often seen in large numbers at Lake Magadi, located at the center of the crater.

Ngorongoro Crater Weather & Best Time to Visit

The climate within the Ngorongoro Crater remains relatively constant, making it a great destination at any time of year. However, there are certain factors to consider when planning your visit:

  • Year-Round Wildlife Viewing: Due to the consistent wildlife population, there’s no “bad” time to visit Ngorongoro Crater. The animals remain within the crater throughout the year, ensuring fantastic game viewing during every season.
  • Low Season for a Quieter Experience: While the crater is always busy with vehicles, visiting during the low season (April to May) can offer a more peaceful and exclusive experience. During this period, the park sees fewer visitors, and you can enjoy the spectacular views and wildlife without large crowds.
  • Flamingo Sightings: For bird enthusiasts, Lake Magadi is a key highlight. During the wet season, when water levels rise, the lake attracts thousands of flamingos. This is an especially good time for those interested in capturing stunning photographs of these graceful birds.
